A hospitalisation plan reimburses or pays directly for medical treatment while you're admitted including room and board, surgery, ICU, medication and related fees. When it comes with a medical card, eligible charges at panel hospitals are settled by the insurer so you avoid paying upfront.
Eligible expenses are the charges your policy agrees to cover when they are medically necessary and administered by a licensed practitioner. Typical examples include ward charges, surgeon and anaesthetist fees, operating theatre, medication, diagnostic imaging and pre/post-hospitalisation consultations.
Cosmetic procedures, self-inflicted injury, and treatment for undisclosed pre-existing conditions are generally excluded.
An annual limit is the maximum the insurer pays within a policy year and resets each year. A lifetime limit is the total the insurer will ever pay over the life of the policy. A higher or unlimited annual limit matters most if treatment is intensive or drawn out.
Most medical cards are designed for treatment within the country at panel hospitals. Overseas, you'll usually pay first and claim back on a reimbursement basis, up to your plan's limits. Higher-tier plans may include worldwide emergency assistance check your schedule carefully.
That's exactly the best time to get covered. Premiums are lowest and health questions are simplest when you're young and well. Conditions that develop later can become excluded or make cover more expensive so the cost of waiting is often invisible until it's too late.
